CHAPTER 16

The next day, Miranda found herself in front of her computer in the office doing her own Jorogumo research. Hank hadn’t been too keen about leaving his bed when the two of them woke up earlier that morning, so she ended up leaving him at home.

If he needed to go out, she’d installed a doggy door that led to the fenced-in back yard. She’d done it in case she had a situation come up where she couldn’t make it home in a timely manner or when she couldn’t take him with her when she left the house.

It was hard to know when she went out to investigate something just how long it might take, so she’d invested in a few things around the house to help Hank take care of himself. He’d be fine for the day if she had to leave.

It was already much warmer than it had been previously, and although she had the windows open and a fan on, Miranda was thinking about closing them and turning on the air conditioner. The heat wasn’t terrible, but she felt like if it got any hotter, she just might start sweating. Scrolling through the internet, she mentally debated whether it was hot enough to warrant getting up to do it or if she’d survive. Just as she’d made her mind up to do it, her phone rang.

“Hey,” Jack said, sounding exhausted. “I think we may have another missing person.”

“Really?” Miranda asked. This wasn’t good.

“Yeah, this one lives between here and Miami. The person reporting it called me because they thought I wouldn’t be as busy as the Miami Police Department.” He sounded a little irritated, but quickly recovered. “I was wondering if you could come along, since you helped me with the last one? Maybe see if there are similarities?”

Miranda hoped this wasn’t another local victim and just someone that had been out too late. She crossed her fingers for luck. “Sure, come get me at my office, and I’ll be happy to join you and ride along,” she said before hanging up. Her tone was light, but her mind had begun to race. This wasn’t good. Someone else was missing? But the lake wasn’t located between Little Feather and Miami. Could it just be a coincidence?

She hoped it was. Because if this spider had stretched her web of entanglement that far, she wasn’t sure what she should do. Scott may have told her not to go after it until they had more information, but she might not be able to keep that promise. Not if Jack started to put things together. She was just grateful he’d called her about it. What if he would have taken off on his own? She didn’t even want to think about it.

After shutting down her office and flipping the sign over to show she was closed, Miranda shut the door behind her and locked it. It wouldn’t take Jack long to show up, so she stood outside in the shade and waited.
